When I made a trip to LA with my sister, she suggested that we check out the American Apparel Factory Flea Market located at 747 Warehouse St. I probably have more than enough clothes from AA because I used to work there but I said, sure why not?!

This is what the factory looks like, with a HUGE parking lot so you won’t have to worry about parking. They have both factory boutique, typical AA store with full retail priced items, and factory flea market, where you will get some great discount.

Their items are significantly cheaper than the retail price, but be aware that the majority of merchandise sold here have factory defects (pen marks, stains, wrong cut, off size, off color, etc). Don’t get me wrong though, you can find normal items if you search well and if you are lucky. Kudos to AA for selling these at a cheaper price rather than wasting them.

If you are looking to buy AA products for cheaper but without the defects, try visiting an outlet store if there is one near you. At outlet stores, they sell normal merchandise that weren’t necessarily the ‘popular’ style at a cheaper price.

First impression: this place is HUGE! The flea market has pretty much everything you can buy from AA, from accessories to basics to hoodies. You can find hoodie of any color and t-shirt of any color(for both men and women).

So is it worth making the trip here? In my opinion, Yes.

In addition to having every style made by the brand, I was impressed that they carried a lot of new styles here. You can definitely steal some disco pants or riding pants for $50, which is a lot more affordable than what they originally cost.

I bought two basic black leggings, which both had grey pen marks on. The markings weren’t very noticeable and I wasn’t bothered by them too much so I got them anyway. I came home, washed them and now the markings are almost gone. So it was well worth it.

hongdae seoul korea

Walking around Hongdae University area at night gets me nostalgic. This place left the strongest impression on me from my visit years back because it captures the overall vibe of the country. If you have a short stay in Korea, I suggest checking out university towns such as Hongdae, Eehwadae. Yundae, etc, to get the most out of your visit. University areas, especially Hongdae, are culturally rich, full of entertainments and young spirits. Hongdae nol-ee-tuh(playground) is famous for artists and musicians performing. I used to come here often for concerts and night outs. From indie to hiphop to rock, you can spot a lot of talented, underground musicians in this area.

Huge H&M! Somehow visual merchandising in Korea is better than the US. They make H&M look like a luxury brand.

The main reason for my visit this time was to check out Stylenanda’s biggest offline store. Stylenanda started as an online shopping mall and now plays a significant role in setting the trend that celebrities love to wear their quirky, unique clothes. They implemented smart, impeccable marketing strategies into their website. After years of huge success and support, they decided to open offline stores in several locations.

I believe they are one of the first brands to bring in Jeffrey Campbell shoes in to Korea, my obsession.

In addition to a successful clothing line, they own an even more profitable makeup line. A lot of online shoppers were inquiring the makeup products models had on for their photoshoots and they saw that as a chance to launch a cosmetics line. They spent years to develop high quality products that professional makeup artists for Korean celebrities LOVE.

They are best known for the lipsticks and the blushes. The pigmentation is great and blending is effortless. I am a NARS lover and I can tell you that 3 Concept Eyes is comparable to NARS in terms of quality and packaging yet much cheaper.

I admire their work ethic. They don’t seem to believe in ‘good enough’. What started as an online shopping mall launched a makeup brand, opened up several offline stores in Korea, opened a store in HK, and still continuously expanding. They are changing the notion of what online shopping malls can possibly do, encouraging other business owners to push their boundaries. They are currently (and in the history) the most profitable online shopping mall in Korea.

thrift store in Korea

Today my mom showed me around what I would consider the Goodwill/Salvation Army of Korea. We went to three different locations in Seoul. I was impressed by the clean and neat condition of the stores. These stores use the profit off selling donated items (i.e., clothing, furniture, books) for charity.

Bling Platoon night flea market, non-hyun-dong seoul korea

This unique night flea market in Seoul, Korea takes place every 1st Saturday of the month. I unfortunately cannot make it to the next coming event since my flight back to the states is two days before the Saturday. This post is based on the last two times I was here. It takes place in a building that looks like a huge container box. You can tell they put a lot of thoughts and fun factors into this place.

This is how the flea market works:

Every vendor at the flea market is given a spot to sell once approved by the event coordinator. They pay a small fee for the spot and are allowed to sell the entire night until they sell out. Because sellers go through approval, you can expect unique, fun pieces at the flea market.

This friendly young man from Jamaica goes by ‘Goldtea’. He was there both times I went to this flea market. He was happy to find someone who speaks English and we had a great conversation. He sells his high quality handmade bracelets and necklaces for very cheap ($5~10). They were all unique and wearable. I bought several bracelets as a gift for friends. He charged me so little that I told him to keep the change.
